About New York Institute of Technology
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is a non-profit private coeducational higher education institute. The institute was established in 1910 and was initially named the New York Technical Institute. The institute was established under its current name in 1955 following a charter from the New York State Board of Regents. The institute aimed since its establishment professional education that would provide chances to the students. However, the institute also aimed at providing balanced education between liberal arts programs, and science and engineering programs. In 1958, the university expanded its campus through the purchase of the 12-story Pythian Temple building. In the same year, the institute sponsored the first National Technology Awards. In 1959, the institute started utilizing several technological instruments for education including the use of teaching machines. In 1965, the institute introduced the use of mainframes which were donated from the CIT Financial Corporation. NYIT was a leading developer of the 3D animations attracting to its labs prominent figures as Pixar Animation Studios President Edwin Catmull and co-founder Alvy Ray Smith; Walt Disney Feature Animation Chief Scientist Lance Williams and DreamWorks animator Hank Grebe. Technologies developed at the institute allowed the making of entirely 3D CGI films. In 1995, NYIT students won the first place in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Air Road Rally. Three years later, the institute initiated its first international program in China. In 2007, the institute received $500,000 as a support to develop alternative food technology. In the following year, the institute received $130,000 contract from United Space Alliance to design the Orion spacecraft using 3-D motion capture technology. In 2013 and 2014, the institute had to close its campuses in Jordon and Bahrain due to changes to the local regulations.
NYIT main campus is located in Old Westbury, New York covering 1,050 acres. The campus was opened in 1965. The campus is also home to the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Additionally, the NYIT has several branch campuses in Manhattan, Central Islip and Arkansas in additional to several international campuses in the United Arab Emirates, China and Canada.
