National American University Seal About National American University

National American University is a private for-profit higher education institute located in Rapid City, South Dakota. The university was founded in 1941 by Clarence Jacobson. It initially started as a one-year secretarial school operating in downtown Rapid City building under the name of National College of Business. In 1960, the college relocated to a newly constructed building at Kansas City Street which is currently administrative building for the Rapid City campus. Two years later, the college was purchased by Harold D. Buckingham and his family. The college was recognized by the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Independent Colleges as a junior college in 1966 before being accredited as a senior college 4 years later. In the following years, the college opened several branch campuses across the United States. In 1985, the college received another accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1996, the college started offering online courses and programs. It achieved in the following year the university status. In 2009, a holding publically traded corporation was established which is responsible for the administration for all campuses of the university in addition to other assets.

The university states that its mission is to provide comprehensive education to diverse students. The university has more than 30 campuses located in 10 different states. The university decided in 2016 to close two of its campuses that were located in Weldon Spring and Tigard. The university also offers several online programs and courses.

The university is divided into 4 colleges offering more than 120 programs. It grants bachelor, masters, associate and doctoral degrees. NAU is accredited by the higher learning commission. The university offers a number of scholarships for undergraduate, masters and doctoral students.
