About Morningside College
Morningside College is a private higher education institute for liberal arts located in Sioux City, Iowa. It was established in 1894 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Its campus was formerly the northern part of the farm of Edwin C. Peters, who established Morningside suburb. The college faced significant financial challenge during the Financial Panic in 1893 that resulted in its closure in the following year. In the same year, the ownership of the college was transferred to the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1914, the same church purchased Charles City College that is located in Charles City, Iowa and merged it into Morningside College. In 1997, part of the college campus was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic district is located on a hilltop overlooking the Missouri River valley.
The college campus covers 100 acres with several distinctive buildings. These include 9 historic buildings as Charles City College Hall, Lewis Hall, Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Library, Lillian Dimmitt House, Dimmitt Residence Hall, Jones Hall of Science, Alice Gymnasium, Roadman Hall and O’Donoghue Observatory. The campus also hosts several registered historic monuments as The Spoonholder and the three Harmony Lane Lampposts. Morningside students have the option to stay at 6 different residential halls including Plex and Lags Hall. The official colors of the college are maroon and white while its mascot is called the mustangs. Its athletic teams compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference as members of NAIA.
Morningside offers 22 undergraduate programs in addition to 2 graduate degree programs including an entirely online program.
