Montclair State University Seal About Montclair State University

Montclair State University is a public research higher education institute located in Montclair, New Jersey. It was established in 1908 as a normal school under the name of New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair. The first class consisted of 187 students taught by 8 faculty members on a campus that covers 25 acres. In 1915, the school established its first residential hall which is known as Russ Hall. In 1927, the college name was changed to Montclair State Teachers College and was the first institute to offer a Bachelor of Arts program in Pedagogy. The name was changed again in 1958 to Montclair State College after it merged with Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene. The college expanded into a comprehensive institute in 1966 and finally achieved the university status in 1998 gaining its current name. It started offering master’s degree programs and doctoral degree programs in 1932 and 2008, respectively. In 2016, the Carnegie Foundation changed the classification of the university from a master’s research institute to a doctoral research institute.

Montclair State has a suburban campus covering around 500 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Abbot and Costello Center, Alexander Kasser Theater, Basie Hall, Blanton Hall, Bond House, Calcia Hall, Chapin Hall, Sprague Library, Stone Hall, Williams Hall and Yogi Berra Museum. The official colors of the university are red and white while its mascot is called Rocky the Red Hawk. Its athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III as members of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

The university is divided into 10 colleges including Feliciano School of Business, John J. Cali School of Music and New Jersey School of Conservation. It offers over 300 programs granting bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees. In 2017, the university was ranked among top 100 public institutes and among the top 200 nationwide by U.S. News & World Report.
