Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is a private professional college offering academic programs in art and design. It was established in 1974 as a successor to the Layton School of Art by seven members of the former school. Layton school, in turn, was established in 1920 by Charlotte R. Partridge and Miriam Frink. It is currently the only four year higher education institute in Wisconsin offering 4-year programs in visual arts and design. It is member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design which includes 42 institutes of arts in Canada and US.

Milwaukee institute states that its mission is to stimulate minds through art, design and service. Its campus consists of three buildings located in the Historic Third Ward of Milwaukee and overlooking the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan. One of the three buildings; Jane Bradley Pettit Building, host four different galleries including Brooks Stevens Gallery of Industrial Design, Frederick Layton Gallery and East Gallery.

MIAD offers art and design programs in 5 different majors and 15 minors. The academic program is divided into foundation part studied during the first year, liberal studies distributed through the four years of study and studio courses that are specific for each major which are studied from the second to the last year of study. Students have the option to study double majors or to mix between majors and minors. The institute also offers a number of short term study abroad programs that allow students to study for up to 4 weeks in various countries around the world. MIAD also offers merit based scholarships that would financially support students with artistic and academic achievement.
