About Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey
Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey is one of the schools of Middlebury College. It was established in 1955 under the name of Monterey Institute for Foreign Studies. The school moved to its current location six years later. In 1997, the institute was the leading institute to offer a master’s degree in environmental policy. In 2005, a partnership agreement was signed between the institute and Middlebury College which directed the reformation of the institute board of trustees to consist of 13 members, four of them should be former members of the Monterey Institute board while the remaining come from the Middlebury college. The agreement resulted 5 years later in the acquisition of the institute to merge as a graduate school of Middlebury College. The name of the institute was changed in 2015 to its current name according to a plan to rebrand the institutes affiliated to Middlebury College.
The institute campus consists of 19 buildings offering distinctive facilities. Prominent buildings on campus include Roderick House, 4-PLex Residential Hall, Morse Building, Holland Center, Simoneau House, Kinnoull House, Segal Building, William Tell Coleman Library, Lara Soto Adobe, Samson Student Center, CNS Building, Craig Building, IIRC Building and Mcgowan Building. The official colors of the university are blue and white.
The institute offers 11 academic programs granting master’s degrees. There are also 4 joint degrees programs which grant master of art degree along with MBA, MPA or bachelor degrees. Students get the chance to travel to Chile, El Salvador, Nepal, and Peru to practice language in country through the Winter Practica. The institute is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. It has three specialized research centers including James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies which is the largest NGO in the world acting against the spread of weapons of mass destruction through 5 research programs.
