About Miami Dade College
Miami Dade College is a public state higher education institute located in Miami, Florida. It was established in 1959 under the name of Dade County Junior College. Classes started in the following year as part of the campus of Miami Central High School along with an adjacent farm. At the same year, the college started building its first campus; the north campus, close to Opa-locka Airport. It was the first integrated junior college in Florida as it enrolled African American students and Cuban exiles. The college responded to the increasing number of enrolled students by establishing its second campus, the South Campus, which was later, renamed Kendall Campus. The college was then renamed Miami-Dade Junior College as it grew more than the University of Florida and Florida State University. Afterwards, the college established a branch campus in Downtown Miami followed by the opening of the Wolfson Campus in 1973. Seven years later, the college established the Hialeah outreach center to accommodate the Cuban refugees and InterAmerican center to offer bilingual education. The Homestead Campus was opened in 1990. In 2002, the college changed its name from Miami-Dade Community College to Miami Dade College after receiving approval to grant 4-year bachelor degrees. However, most of the academic programs offered by the college are still 2-year associate degree programs.
The college currently operates 7 campuses and two centers. Its main campus is Wolfson Campus while its largest campus is the North Campus covering 245 acres. Among the prominent buildings in the main campus are Robert H. McCabe Hall, Wolfson Building Four, Bonnie McCabe Hall and James Lawrence King Justice Building. The official colors of the university are blue and gray while its mascot is called Sharks.
The college is divided into 14 schools and departments offering more than 300 programs. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
