About Metropolitan State University of Denver
Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) is a public state supported higher education institute. It was established in 1965 under the name of Metropolitan State College. It acted as an opportunity school which means that it aimed at allowing chances to education to all students including low-income students. In 1990, the name was changed again to Metropolitan State College of Denver. The college changed its academic calendar in 2008 to complete its semester before the start of the Democratic National Convention. The campus was closed during the convention based on the decision of the United States Secret Service. In 2011, students and faculty voted to change the institute name to Denver State University, however, the name change was faced by objection from the University of Denver. The Decision was cancelled and the name was changed in the following year to its current name. The university was the first university to admit DREAMers, which refers to refugees arriving at the United States when they were younger than 16.
The university campus is located in Denver, Colorado in the Auraria Neighborhood covering 126 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Kenneth King Center, Seventh Street Building, Tivoli Student Union, Auraria Library, St. Francis Center, Auraria Events Center, St. Cajetan’s Church, St. Elizabeth’s Church and Bonfils Memorial, The Regency in addition to North, West and South classroom buildings. The official colors of the university are red and blue while its mascot is called Rowdy the Roadrunner. Its athletic teams compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Students of the university have four different media productions; the Metropolitan, Met Radio, the Met Report and Metrosphere.
The university is divided into 4 schools and colleges offering academic programs in 58 majors and 82 minors. It is accredited by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
