Marymount Manhattan College Seal About Marymount Manhattan College

Marymount Manhattan College is a private independent institute located in Manhattan, New York City. The college was established by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1936 as an extension for Marymount College, Tarrytown in New York City as a two-year college for men. In 1948, the college was converted to a four year college when it moved to its current location. It got an absolute charter from the Regents of the University of the State of New York recognizing it as an independent 4-year college. Although the university no longer considers itself as catholic, it remained to be listed till 2005 in the Catholic Directory. It was removed as response to protests by the Cardinal Newman Society in objection to inviting Hillary Clinton, who supported abortion rights, for a speech in addition to granting her an honorary degree. In 1976, Marymount received the records from Finch College which was closed. In 2001, the university inaugurated one of the tallest residential halls in the world occupying 32 stories in a 46-story building.

Marymount states that its mission is to provide education that would open career opportunities through supporting personal development and intellectual achievement with emphasize on the diversity of its community. The university campus occupies two buildings which are the main building and the Nugent Building. Its official colors are blue and white while its mascot is called the Griffin.

The university offers liberal arts studies in 29 majors and 40 minors. The university also offers 2 study abroad programs allowing the students to complete part of their studies in Perugia and Florence, Italy. Additionally, there are 13 scholarships and awards that support the students in studying abroad in other countries as Japan, Germany, Africa and the Middle East. These include Benjamin A. Gliman International Scholarship Program, Boren Scholarship and Fellowship, and Leopold Schepp foundation grants. Moreover, there are 7 scholarships, several grants and educational loans that can support the students financially.
