Loras College Seal About Loras College

Loras College is a Catholic four-year higher education institute located in Dubuque, Iowa. The college was founded in 1839 by the Most Rev. Bishop Mathias Loras under the name of Saint Raphael’s Seminary. Its name was changed several times as it was named Saint Raphael’s Academy (1839), Mount St. Bernard’s College and Seminary (1850), St. Joseph’s College (1873) Dubuque College (1914) and Columbia College (1920). It finally got its current name in 1939. Loras College initiated its graduate program in 1963 when the Catholic University of America terminated its branch program of graduate studies on that was located at Loras campus. Loras became a coeducational institute in 1971. Loras is one of the three Catholic colleges currently operating in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, which is the only Archdiocese in the United States that is not located in a major metropolitan area.

The college states its mission is to establish a community of active thinkers, decision makers and participants in the professional, religious and social aspects. Loras campus covers 65 acres containing 23 buildings, 2 athletic fields, a stadium, and 5 tennis courts. Facilities include Christ the King Chapel, Wahlert Memorial Library and the Visitation Complex. The oldest building on campus is Hoffmann Hall which was established in 1909. Keane Hall is the most visible building on campus as it is located on the top of the highest hill in the city. During the expansion of the campus, the college purchased Cox Street which runs through the campus for $50,000 and converted it into a pedestrian friendly walk way. The official colors of the university are gold and purple while its mascot is called Dewey the Duhawk. Loras athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III.

The college offers undergraduate programs in more than 50 majors in addition to 11 independent minors. There are also 5 graduate programs and 2 certificate programs. The college is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. All enrolled students receive some sort of financial support.
