About Loma Linda University
Loma Linda University (LLU) is a Seventh-day coeducational university offering Adventist and health sciences studies located in Loma Linda, California. Ellen G. White, Adventist pioneer and spiritual guide, was charmed when she first visited Loma Linda by its beautiful scenery, describing it as “the most desirable place I have ever seen for a sanitarium”. On August 1905, Loma Linda Sanitarium was established; six weeks later, the first two patients were received. In the following year, The Loma Linda College of Evangelists was established after John Burden and Ellen G. White purchased the land for the institute. The legal title “College of Medical Evangelists of Loma Linda (CME)” was adopted, noting that the school was commissioned as a Medical College in 1909. The college name was changed in 1910 to “Loma Linda College”. During the period between 1913 and 1962, the college offered basic sciences only to the students who had to move to Los Angeles to get clinical experience. In 1961, the college was promoted to university status and changed its name to Loma Linda University. In 1967, the university established the Loma Linda University Medical Center. The university also operated a liberal arts college in Riverside, which is the Seventh-day Adventist, from 1967 to 1990. This college is now known as La Sierra University. In 1980, the state nominated LLU as the only Level I trauma center in San Bernardino, Riverside, Mono and Inyo counties, which include more than a fourth of the state’s land total area.
Loma Linda’s motto is “To Make Man Whole”, stating that its mission is to follow the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ”. The university medical center, which is commonly known as LLUMC, currently receives more than 30,000 patients annually.
The university is divided into 9 schools offering more than 55 programs by the schools of Allied Health Professions. Curricula introduced variety of certificates of completion and associate in science degrees, and doctor of philosophy and professional doctoral degrees, as well.
