LIU is a private higher education institute that began in the year 1926 when it founded as a center of education for diverse individuals. The university began with around 300 students and mostly consisted of individuals with immigrant backgrounds. The institute also affiliated itself with the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy (founded in 1891) in year 1929.

As it progressed, the university grew out into other academic disciplines; it also expanded into a two campus system and LIU Brooklyn is the first of the private Long Island University system. It is based in Brooklyn (NYC), New York and is on the mission to provide high quality educational opportunities as a way towards progressive societies and bright future for its students.

At the Brooklyn campus, the university offers range of activities whereby students develop and pursue their interests. There are over 60 student led clubs and organisations that include media, academic, arts, health, recreation and many other disciplines and where students not only find learn outside classrooms but also get the chance to socialise and make new friends. There is also the Greek Life and the Student Government which serve as motivators for the students to perform well academically and be actively involved in extracurricular as well as the campus life. For the new students, the university also offers ‘learning communities’ where students are grouped together and work collaboratively towards achieving common objectives. There are also entertainment opportunities available on the campus with events including those of arts and culture, exhibitions, theatre performances, and also conferences, speaker sessions, lectures and, workshops and training for student development. There are also recreation and sports on campus; with university having its athletic teams, ‘Blackbirds’ competing at NCAA Division I. The university mascot is ‘Blackbird’.

The academic programs at this campus consist of 40 undergraduate programs, 33 graduate programs, six Doctoral programs, six certificate programs. There are also online and continuing education programs. Its prominent academic departments are Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn School of Nursing and Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
