Langston University Seal About Langston University

Langston University is a public university and the only historically black university located in Oklahoma. It was established in 1897 under the name of Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University as a result of the second Morrill Act in 1890. This act required from states with land grant universities to either admit African American or establish an alternative institute for them in order to be able to receive federal funds. It was renamed Langston University in 1940 in honor of John Mercer Langston who was a civil rights leader, congressman and founder of the Howard University Law School. In the 1960s, Langston underwent complete renovation with several additions to its facilities. In 2005, the university was approved to offer doctoral degree program.

Langston campus is located in a rural area of Langston, Oklahoma with several distinctive buildings as the President’s residence, Centennial Courts Apartments, Cimmarron Gardens Apartments, W.E. Anderson Stadium, Langston Commons Apartments, John & Laurie Coleman Heritage Center, I.W. Young Auditorium, Hargrove Music Hall, G. Lamar Harrison Library, Page Hall, the White House, Young Hall and Calvin Hall/ITS among others. The official colors of the university are orange and blue while its athletic teams who are nicknamed the Lions compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC).

The university is divided into six schools in additions to the graduate education and summer programs. It offers 25 bachelor degree program, 6 associate degree programs, 3 graduate degree programs and 1 doctoral degree program. There are other non-degree programs as The Edwin P. Mccabe Honors Program. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in addition to six other accreditation agencies providing accreditation to specific programs.
