La Sierra University Seal About La Sierra University

La Sierra University, commonly known as La Sierra or LSU, is a non-profit co-educational institute that is located in Riverside, California. It was established as La Sierra Academy by the Adventist Church in 1922, when Willits J. Hole, an American businessman and real estate entrepreneur of Southern California, gave a 300-acres land located in Riverside to Southeastern California Conference, one of the Adventist Church councils. La Sierra Academy’s name was changed twice during 1927 to be La Sierra Academy and Normal School then Southern California Junior College as a result of its expansion in offering courses to future teachers. It was renamed again in 1939 to be La Sierra College. A year later, the section of high school was separated and renamed to be La Sierra College Preparatory School, currently known as La Sierra Academy and located near to the university. La Sierra College was approved as a four-year degree granting college in liberal arts studies in 1946. In 1967, both La Sierra College and Loma Linda University merged together forming Loma Linda University’s College of Arts and Sciences which was split again into two independent universities in 1990. Consequently, La Sierra campus was renamed again to be La Sierra University. In 2000, an entrepreneur purchased 200 acres of La Sierra’s campus, formerly used in agriculture and diary, to be converted into what is known now as Riverwalk. Beside Riverside Campus, La Sierra has another extended one that offers a Master of Arts degree in Education located in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada.

Frances E. Barnard Memorial Observatory, located behind the campus, was made to honor Frances Evelyn Barnard, Marion Cecil Barnard’s mother, who contributed money for building the observatory and purchase two telescopes for the campus. La Sierra has been selected by the U.S. News and World Report as assorted university in the western region of the United States for consecutive five years.

La Sierra offers undergraduate degrees in 24 majors and more than 70 minors. It also offers 6 graduate degrees in more than 30 concentrations in addition to some adult evening and online programs.
