About Kenrick Glennon Seminary
Kenrick–Glennon Seminary or Saint Louis Roman Catholic Theological Seminary is a private non-profit Roman Catholic Seminary. It was founded in 1818 by Bishop Louis William Valentine Dubourg as Saint Mary’s of the Barrens Seminary in Perryville, Missouri, which was the first seminary established west of the Mississippi River. The Seminary is named after two former Archbishops of Saint Louis; Peter Richard Kenrick and Cardinal John J. Glennon. The Seminary is now located in Shrewsbury, Missouri in St. Louis County. Since that time, the school has provided education and development to seminarians for ordination to the holy priesthood for many Catholic congregations and dioceses. The Seminary has witnessed few changes in its names, starting from its initial name “Saint Mary’s of the Barrens Seminary” in 1818, moving to its second name “Kenrick Seminary” in 1893 at the re-opening of the philosophy and theology departments. In 1931, the first Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary, the current Kenrick–Glennon Seminary building, was established and opened on the same lands of the second Kenrick.
One of the main iconic buildings of Kenrick–Glennon Seminary is the Charles L. Souvay, C.M. Memorial Library, which comprises a large gathering of theological reference books, periodicals, and journals. The library is accessible not only to students of the seminary, but also to the public. The library contains over 80,000 monographs and journals with significant concentrations in philosophy, theology, etc.
The Seminary has a graduate (Kenrick School of Theology) and undergraduate (Cardinal Glennon College) divisions. Kenrick School of Theology offers the Master of Divinity Degree (M.Div.) and the Master of Arts degree in Theology (M.A.), and Cardinal Glennon College offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Philosophy.
