About Kansas City Art Institute
Kansas City Art Institute is a private college for fine arts and design established in 1885 as “Sketch Club” aiming at managing arts matters and judging pictures. Club meetings were initially held at private homes before moving to Deardorf Building in Kansas City. Two years later, the club held its first exhibition and established the Kansas City Art Association and School of Design. In 1927, the school moved to its current campus which was initially the August R. Meyer residence covering 8 acres. The real estate was adjacent to site planned for Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It was later named Vanderslice Hall and listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with the Mineral Hall. In 1977, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival started for the benefit of the institute and remained till 1999 when it was sold to a for-profit company. In 1992, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art was opened on campus. In 2015, the school received the largest gift to an American art institute as a donation of $25 million on the occasion of the 130th anniversary.
The school offers programs in 15 different majors. All students join during their first year of undergraduate studies the freshmen foundation which provide orientation to the different fields or what is called studio immersion. The school also offers 2 certificate programs. Additionally, students are allowed to complete part of their studies abroad through various programs and agreements with other schools as University of Missouri, Rockhurst University, Penn Valley Community College and Longview Community College among others. The school offers several scholarship, grants and financial aid programs including merit based scholarships that provide financial support to enrolled students. Kansas City is an accredited member of NASAD, AICAD and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
