Iowa State University Seal About Iowa State University

Iowa State University (ISU) is a land grant research-based public university located in Ames City in Iowa State. It was established in 1858 as Iowa agricultural College and Model farm by Iowa General Assembly. Its original site was selected in State County when 648 acres farm land was purchased for more than $5,000. In 1861, the first building in Iowa campus was built and named the Farm House. The first class joined Iowa in 1869 and graduated in 1872. Iowa inaugurated the first state’s veterinary medicine in the United States in 1879. Afterwards, Iowa expanded its programs to involve agriculture, economics, engineering and extension so its name was consequently changed in 1898 to be Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts. It provided its faculty and students with high standards research facilities that led them to end up with many patents such as the Maytag blue cheese, the first binary computer, the round hay baler, etc. In 1959 Iowa changed its name again to be officially Iowa State University of Science and Technology, commonly known as Iowa State University after it had opened its college of liberal arts and sciences. ISU campus consists of more than 160 building occupying around 490 acres land full of huge green areas.

ISU is ranked as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity according to Carnegie Classification of Institution of Higher Education and the 111th national university according to the U.S. news and World Report. Its campus location is selected as “medallion site” by the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1999 due to following the landscape design. It includes the Campanile, a famous tower located in the central campus as a memorial to the Iowa State’s first dean of women, Margaret MacDonald Stanton.

The university consists of 8 colleges and 2 schools among them is the Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It offers around 100 undergraduate degrees, 112 master degrees and 83 doctoral degrees in addition to a unique professional program in Veterinary Medicine.
