Iona College Seal About Iona College

Iona College is a four-year private college located in New Rochelle, New York. It was established in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The college was named after Iona, the island monastery of St. Columba which is located off the west coast of Scotland. At the time of establishment, Christian brothers were teaching in nine schools however, they found that many students particularly of the working class could not afford these schools. This motivated them to establish Iona College as affordable cost. In 1984, the New York governor delivered the commencement speech for the college. In 1989, the college merged with Elizabeth Seton College. In 2017, the college alumnus James Hynes and his wife, Anne Marie donated $15 million to Iona to establish a the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

Iona operates a suburban 45-acres campus with several distinctive buildings as Murphy Center, McSpedon Hall, Arrigoni Center, Doorley Hall, Cornelia Hall, Amend Hall, Ryan Library and Hagan Hall which are academic lecture halls. Other facilities include Hynes Athletic Center and Ryan Library in addition to residential halls as Loftus Hall, Conese and South Hall, Rice Hall, East Hall, North Avenue Residence Hall and Eastchester Apartments. Iona athletic teams who are called Gaels are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and NCAA Division I. The official colors of the university are maroon and gold while its mascot is called Killian.

The college is divided into three main divisions including Hagan School of Business and Rockland Graduate Center which are subdivided into 22 departments offering 40 undergraduate programs and more than 25 master degree programs in addition to certificate programs. Iona is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in addition to specialized accreditation to several programs.
