Humboldt State University Seal About Humboldt State University

Humboldt State University is a public university that is member of the California State University system. It was established in 1913 as a teacher’s college that was named Humboldt State Normal School in honor of the prominent German scientist Alexander von Humboldt. The land for the university campus was donated by William Preston and the Union Water company. The school opened its first class in 1916. Five years later, the college to its current location and was put under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Education. Its name was also changed to Humboldt State Teacher’s College and Junior College. It started to offer bachelor degree programs in 1927. It was renamed again in 1935 to Humboldt State College. During the World War II, the Founder’s hall was camouflaged by painting it in green to protect it against Japanese submarines’ attacks. Humboldt started offering graduate programs in 1947 and it terminated the junior college program in 1962. Ten years later, the name was changed again to California State University, Humboldt however, people continued to call Humboldt State and thus the name was finally changed to its current one in 1974.

The university campus covers 144 acres in Arcata, California in addition to five off-campus facilities with total area including the campus of 591 acres. The campus offers several distinctive facilities to the students including College Greek Complex, Harry Griffith Hall, Schatz Energy Research Center, Redwood Bowel, Founders Hall, Siemens Hall, John Van Duzer Theatre, Gist Hall, Warren House, Nelson Hall and Jolly Giant Commons and Residence Halls. The official colors of the university are gold and green while its mascot is called Lucky Logger. Its athletic teams who are called the Lumberjacks compete in NCAA Division II and California Collegiate Athletic.

Humboldt is divided into three colleges offering 49 bachelor degree programs, 12 master’s degree programs in 73 minors, and 14 credential programs. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
