About Houghton College
Houghton College is a Christian private liberal arts higher education institute. The college was established in 1883 under the name of Houghton Seminary by Willard J. Houghton who was a Wesleyan Methodist minister. Sixteen years later, Houghton started to offer college classes. It was not until 1923 that the college got its provisional charter. It got its permanent charter four years later and was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 1935. Additionally, the college established the West Seneca campus after merging with Buffalo Bible Institute. The college started its first graduate program in 2004.
The college main campus is located in Allegany County, New York covering 1,300 acres on the Allegheny Plateau at roughly 1,300 feet above sea level. It is a residential campus with several distinctive buildings including Reinhold campus center, Luckey memorial building, Willard J. Houghton library, Wesley Chapel, Gillette hall, Lambein hall, Rothenbuhler hall, Shenawana hall and Fancher hall. The college has two additional off campus sites at Niagara Falls and in Lockport, New York offering adult programs. The official colors for the university are purple and gold. Houghton athletic teams, who are nicknamed the highlander, compete in the NCAA Division III and the Empire 8 Conference.
The college offers undergraduate studies in 46 majors and 17 minors granting associate and bachelor degrees. It also offers 6 graduate programs through the Greatbatch School of music. The college offers 10 pre-professional programs and has agreements to allow students to get enrolled into graduate programs at other colleges as Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. There are also six online offered programs. Undergraduate students have the option to join the Summer Research Institute in various science fields.
