About Highline College
Highline College is a public higher education institute located in Des Moines, Washington. The college was founded in 1961 becoming the first community college in King County. Initially, Highline operated in 14 portable classrooms on the campus of Glacier High School. The college moved to its current location three years later. It remained part of the school district till 1967 when the Community College Act of 1967 allowed Highline College to become independent and to expand. In 1972, the Highline foundation was established as a non-profit foundation that aims at raising funds for financial support of the college. Highline is currently governed by a board of trustees consisting of five members.
The college states its mission is to provide education that promotes student engagement and achievement emphasizing on sustainability of resources.
Highline campus covers 80 acres at a site filled with trees. The campus offers several prominent facilities to the students including the college library. This library contains a collection of more than 145,000 prints with several special collections as The New Readers Collection, The Legal Collection, Periodical and Scholarly Journal/Magazine Collection and The Stanley P. Owens Native American Collection. The library is part of the the Federal Depository Library Program. The campus contains a facility for Central Washington University as part of the partnership between the two universities allowing students to take classes from both universities at the same time. Highline has a Center for Science and Technology that is located 10 min away from its main campus. The college athletic teams, who are nicknamed thunderbirds, compete in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).
The college offers more than 100 programs in six different areas of studies offering 5 different degrees and two certificate programs. It is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities.
