Gonzaga University Seal About Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University is a Roman Catholic private university founded in 1881 as Gonzaga College by the Italian-born priest and missionary Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J. The college started on 320 acres of land and water, and costed 936 hard silver dollars. People called it in the beginning “the old piece of gravel near the falls”. The college officially started in 1887, six years later, with one building for “young scholastics”. The name of the university is derived from the name of the young Jesuit saint Aloysius Gonzaga. It started with 18 boys whose passion was to be priests. It is now named Gonzaga University and it is located in Spokane, Washington. Gonzaga was entrusted with the Jesuit priests and it is now a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Its campus consists of more than 105 buildings on 152 acres of grassland.

The university is classified 4th in the rankings of the U.S. News & World Report 2016 of Regional Universities in the West. The school of engineering and applied science was ranked 22nd best undergraduate engineering program countrywide. Some other U.S. News rankings introduce Gonzaga as the 4th-Best Value school in the west. It is on record among The Princeton Review’s rankings of the best 378 institutes and included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges. Gonzaga’s sports teams are nicknamed the Zags and they are member of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference. The official mascot is the Bulldog, while the  official campus colors are blue and red.

The university grants bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees in 92 fields and 26 graduate programs through its seven colleges. In addition, Gonzaga pasture an army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program which qualifies students to graduate as commissioned officers.
