Fordham University Seal About Fordham University

Fordham University is a non-profit, private coeducational research university located in New York City with three main campuses: Lincoln Center in Manhattan, Rose Hill in the Bronx, and Westchester in West Harrison. It was founded in 1841 by the Most Reverend John J. Hughes, the coadjutor bishop of the Catholic Diocese of New York. It was initially named St. John’s College. The schools of law and medicine were added to St. John’s College in 1905 and then its name was changed into its contemporary name of Fordham University in 1907. It was named after the village of Fordham where the original campus of Rose Hill is located. The Society of Jesus was caring of it until conversion into an independent institution with a board of trustees. Fordham is described as the Jesuit University of New York.

The university’s Latin motto is “Sapientia et Doctrina”, which means wisdom and learning. In addition, the mission of Fordham comes down through three ideas; strive for excellence in everything you do, fight for justice, and care for others.

The university received its accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Nationally, Fordham was ranked 60th, according to the U.S. News & World Report in its edition of 2017, between the best colleges for its undergraduate programs; and the graduate schools of business, history, English, education, social work, and sociology scored different rankings but all of them are among among the top 100 in the United States. Internationally, Fordham is ranked 93rd according to the times Higher Education ranking of the World’s top 100 universities for producing millionaires. Fordham is proud of producing 102 Fulbright Scholarships since 2003, 1207 Awards and Scholarships since 2003, 2600 internship companies based in New York city, and 1.2 million community service hours in 2013. The official colors of the campus are Maroon and white, while its mascot is the Ram.

Fordham has four undergraduate colleges and six graduate schools in different disciplines. This includes Gabelli school of business and the BFA program in dance in collaboration with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
