Florida State University Seal About Florida State University

Florida State University is a public research university and a member of State University System of Florida. It was established in 1851 as West Florida Seminary by a decision from the Florida Legislature. During the civil war, the legislature decided to start formal military training at the school converting it to The Florida Military and Collegiate Institute. In 1883, the seminary became part of Florida University according to law amendment. In 1901, the university was named Florida State College with four schools.

FSU campus covers approximately 500 acres of land with 1,375,000 sq.m of built area. It owns more than 1,600 acres. Westcott building is among the most prominent buildings in the campus and it is the oldest site dedicated to higher education in Florida. The building includes Ruby Diamond auditorium which is the main performance place for the university. There are several historic residence halls in the university as Bryan, Broward, Gilchrist, Jennie Murphree and Reynolds halls in addition to three new residential complexes. The university is served by seven libraries including Dirac Science Library, Strozier Library, Maguire Medical Library and Strozier Library which is the main library and is the only one to open 24 hours per day throughout the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, FSU has a satellite campus in panama city besides a Coastal and Marine Laboratory 70 kilometers far from the main campus in Tallahassee covering 25 acres of land. The university administers John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art with more than 10,000 objects. The museum is the largest university museum complex in USA and the second most popular attraction in Florida. FSU official colors are garnet and gold and its athletic teams are nicknamed the Seminoles.

FSU receives funds reaching 1.7$ billion annually and contributes to the economy with more than 10$ billion. It offers 341 degree programs including bachelor, master, doctoral and professional degree programs through 16 colleges. It has been designated as a preeminent research institute and it was named as the most efficient US university by US news and world report.
