About Florida Southern College
Florida southern college (FSC) is the oldest four-year private college in Florida. It was established in 1883 in Orlando under the name Florida Southern. Since then the college relocated several times. It relocated two years after its establishment to Leesburg. In 1901, FSC moved to Sutherland which is now called Palm Harbor. In the early 1920s, fires caused the college to move temporarily to Clearwater beach before terminally relocating to its current campus in Lakeland. It got its current name in 1935 based on a decision by its board of trustees.
The current FSC campus covers 110 acres with 70 buildings. It is considered the largest collection in the world of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. The campus is registered as a historic district on the National Register of Historic places. It has also been recently included within the National Historic Landmarks. The campus has been chosen as the most beautiful campus in the United States several times. It includes several distinctive buildings as Barnett Residential Life Center, Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, Buckner Building, Ordway Building, Polk County Science Building and E.T. Roux Library. The university is expanding its campus by acquiring several residential complexes in the neighborhoods. The official colors for FSC are the scarlet and white while its mascot is the Water Moccasin.
FSC has prominent athletic teams participating in Sunshine State conference. It has won NCAA Division II championship 29 times. The College provides facilities for more than 10 different sports for men and women.
FSC offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs in various disciplines including science, arts, education and nursing. It also offers masters and doctoral degrees. It adopts teaching style that encourages engaged learning with emphasis on internships and undergraduate research. A wide variety of scholarships are provided by the college through different schemes including athletic achievement, academic-merit based and special interest scholarships. The University schools include Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise which has been named after Carol Jenkins Barnett’s husband. Carol provided undisclosed funds supporting the construction of new undergraduate business building.
