About Escuela de Artes Plasticas y Diseno de Puerto Rico
The school of Plastic Arts in Puerto Rico is a higher education institute teaching undergraduate students visual arts and design. It was established in 1966 in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the Institute of Peurto Rican Culture. The university occupied two historic buildings; the old house of Locos and the restored Hospital de la Concepción.
The university states that its mission is to “train professionals in the disciplines of the plastic arts, design and education of art, through an education that promotes creativity, humanistic development and visual culture”. The university organizes several annual cultural events including conferences, concerts, film, video, and theatrical presentations. This is considered part of the training the students get during their studies. The University also has its own gallery dedicated to show the work of the students. It also organizes a number of galleries and exhibitions at various public and private institutes. Moreover, the university owns Fransisco Oller library and a design center supporting the students with sources and services required during their studies. It has a center for Life and Career planning that aims at providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to get employed.
The teaching mode of the school upon its inauguration was to deliver artistic workshops to students rather than full time regular studies. Later the school was converted into a university offering the baccalaureate degree with seven main concentrations in art education, sculpture, design and digital Art, painting, graphic arts, industrial design and fashion design in addition to short non-degree courses.
