Edward Waters College About Edward Waters College

Edward Waters is a private institute that was founded with the only objective to provide for educational opportunities for the former African American slaves in the region. It was founded in year 1866 as a school when Reverend Charles H. Pearce saw the need for an institute and raised funds to build it. The college received further help during its early years and soon flourished into a college.

It was the first institute in the state to be established for the African Americans and was named Edward Waters College in 1892, after the third Bishop of the AME Church. Being a historically black institute, it is since committed to providing educational excellence, setting high moral standards and focusing on research as well as service for a better future of the communities.

Dedicated to student success, the college offers every necessary resource required for a complete development of its students. There are a range of student led organisations as well as the student Government Association both of which serve as primary units for learning a new skills and getting hands on leadership experience and exposure. There is also an active Greek Life on campus as well as social events, providing entertainment as well as the chance to make new friends. Student activities also consist of volunteering programs and service initiatives wherein students connect with people outside campus by serving them. With strong character development, there is also emphasis on religious development; the Campus ministry and Chaplain provide chapel services, prayer and worship activities, sermon sessions and others. Additional student services exist in the form of counselling service helping students in their academic journeys and eliminating obstacles, and career services ensuring chances for successful career start of its students. The college also has its athletic teams, called ‘Tigers and Lady Tigers’ taking part at NAIA. Its campus colors are Purple, Orange and White.

The academic programs at Edward Waters consist of three Bachelors degree programs in eight academic disciplines. Its prominent facility is the Centennial Hall, which is added to the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.
