EWU, a public university began in year 1882 when it was founded as Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, named after its founder. The academy saw the light of the day with the huge grant from Benjamin Pierce Cheney. As it developed, it turned into a normal school and by 1937 into a college of education. After WWII, it emerged as a state college consequently adding degree programs to its curriculum.

By 1977, it was officially bestowed upon the university status, being renamed as Eastern Washington University by the Washington State Legislature. Based in Cheney, Washington the university has always been engaged in adding values to the life of its students through knowledge, skills and an environment where they work towards success.

With a long history and rich tradition, the university campus comes with a vibrant student life where students find over 130 student led clubs offering range of interests and activities, and providing healthy socialising opportunities. There are also leadership and engagement activities available through the Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL) office where students work to improve campus life, act as student representatives and organise events and programs for fellow students. These also bring Greek Life to the campus, social and community outreach activities; through these the students step out to connect with the community and people beyond the campus boundaries. Entertainment at campus comes through yearly events being held such as comedy performances, concerts, arts performances, lecture and many others. There are also unique campus traditions such as Pass through the Pillars, The Kissing Rock, The Egg Drop Contest, The Firing of the Cannon at football game and many others. The students also actively take part in athletics; its teams are ‘Eagles’ and compete at NCAA Division I. Its official mascot is ‘Swoop’ and its colors are Red and White.

At EWU there are 135 fields of study including nine Master’s degrees, 12 graduate certificates, 39 graduate programs, one educational specialist degree and one applied doctorate. Its notable facilities are Streeter Hall, Pearce Hall, Morrison Hall, Louise Anderson Hall, Dressler Hall, Eisenhower Center and others.
