Drake University Seal About Drake University

Drake is a private coeducational institute that was founded by two passionate individuals, George T. Carpenter and Francis Marion Drake; former was a teacher and preacher and the latter served during the Civil War. It began in 1881 and held classes during its time in a single building but expanded into a permanent campus by 1883. Not only this, the institute also expanded greatly into other academic fields.

The university was originally affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) but that ended. Today, based in Des Moines, Iowa, it provides an environment where its students learn, feel nourished and grow intellectually and personally. It prepares them for profession but also for a progressing society.

At Drake University students are surrounded with plenty of opportunities and activities to make their ride enjoyable. As a form of learning units, there are more than 160 student led clubs and organisations present on campus which contribute majorly to extracurricular activities in the campus. There are academic, political, religious, cultural and most importantly the governance organisations. These provide the opportunity to firsthand experience of being and serving as a leader on various student issues and representations. Another most important aspect is the service learning where students are encouraged to serve the community by working with local non profit organisations, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters to Habitat for Humanity and others. Taking time off from studies, students are also allowed to enjoy and party as events are organised all year round which include musical concerts, movie nights, comedy shows and plays. There are also some traditional events at the university such as Street Painting, Hubbelling, Kissing Rock and few more. The university has its athletic teams which compete at NCAA Division I; the mascot is ‘Spike’ and the colors are Blue and White.

Academic programs at Drake consist of undergraduate programs with over 70 majors, minors, and concentrations and more than 20 masters, doctoral, and professional degrees. Its notable facilities are Ross Hall, Crawford Hall, Carpenter Hall, Stalnaker Hall, Cowles Library Harmon Fine Arts Center and more.
