About CUNY York College
York is a Public institute and another one of the senior colleges of City University of New York (CUNY) system. It was founded in the year 1966 and was the first of the eleven colleges, and traces its history to the Free Academy founded in 1847 by Townsend Harris. The college began instruction a year later in 1967. The college faced several changes in its curriculum over the years and gradually expanded it to the present day liberal arts and sciences.
It moved to its present day campus in 1986, based in Jamaica in Queens, New York. York College has developed itself into an institute which imparts education by encouraging its students to find their interests, be involved in intellectual pursuit and go beyond their potential.
At York, the campus resources are dedicated to bringing student success. The students find a variety of activities whether it is academic, recreation, arts, or taking part in student leadership. There is Student Government on campus which provides a great chance for students looking to learn leadership and work for their fellow student interests. For students who show exemplary achievements, there is also an honor society, The National Society of Leadership and Success. With leadership comes community service and engagement, and so ‘Jumpstart’ is the opportunity where the students connect with preschool children in underprivileged communities in the neighbourhood teaching them language and improving literacy. The college also runs a women center for women empowerment. For fun and entertainment, there are performing arts center which brings many theatrical performances and shows and a Game Room which is the hub of student activity, as students gather around for games, and relaxation. There are also the athletic teams, called ‘Cardinals’ that compete at NCAA Division III and its colors are White, Red & Black.
Academic programs at York are Bachelors degree in 40 academic disciplines, organised around three schools, the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business & Information Systems, and the School of Health Sciences and Professional Programs. Its notable facility is the Milton G. Bassin Performing Arts Center.
