About CUNY Lehman College
Lehman is a public institute and senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) system which was founded in the year 1931. It originally began as the branch of Hunter College and during the WWII was used as training facility for women by the United States Navy. The campus was later also used by the United Nations for a brief period of time. As CUNY was established in 1961, the college was also established as the first and only senior college in Bronx.
The college was named after Herbert H. Lehman, former New York governor, senator and philanthropist and is located in Bronx in New York. As a liberal arts institute, it is committed to the providing experiential learning platform and the opportunity for inquiry into the academic fields for sound intellectual development of its students.
At Lehman, student life is balance of studies, learning and extracurricular activities. Life begins with the Student Government, which is the student representation on campus and works to make the campus more enjoyable and campus life more comfortable for every student present. It also works to plan and bring events for the students. Other leadership participation opportunities exist through formal education such as seminars. Further ahead, students also have more than 50 student led organisation and clubs including Honor societies. These serve as social platforms offering skills in academic, politics, recreation and others and also improve communication with other students on campus. Community service is a popular theme as students take part in advocating global issues and volunteering for service corps. There is also particular enthusiasm for Performing Arts as students bring music, theatre, poetry as added entertainment. There are also campus athletic teams ‘Lightning’, at NCAA Division III. The campus colors are Royal Blue, Gold and White.
Academics at the Lehman College consist of 51 undergraduate majors and programs, 46 graduate degree programs, 17 graduate certificates, and 11 doctoral programs. Its notable facilities are The Herbert H. Lehman Center for Student Leadership Development and The Lehman Center for Performing Arts.
