Baruch College is a Public institute and marks its beginning with the founding of Free Academy in 1847, the first free public higher education institute in the country. As it progressed it incorporated many changes and by 1930s also started admitting women. In 1961 the New York State Education Law established the City University of New York system and the college became a part of the system in 1968.

It was named Bernard M Baruch College after Bernard Baruch, a prominent financier and statesman. It is based in Manhattan, New York City and aims to be the platform for the intellectual, social and economic upliftment of its students, preparing them for a diverse set of roles professionally and personally.

At Baruch College, students are never without learning and growing opportunities inside and outside classrooms. There are more than 160 student organisations and clubs which serve as the primary activity center for students to develop interpersonal relations. Besides, students work to take part in student representation bodies, working to improve life for their fellow students and be part of workshops, retreats and many such activities that forward a helping hand towards other students to understand leadership work and take part in it. This helps students to become positive agents of change and the organisations are T.E.A.M. Baruch, Annual Leadership Weekend and others. Students also take part in Active Citizenship which is a community service projects and involve students for volunteer and humanitarian work around the community. There are also performing arts activities where students present musical concerts, theatre performances, as well as lectures throughout the year. There are athletic teams participating at NCAA Division III. The college colors are Blue and White and the mascot is ‘Bearcat’.

Academic program offered consist of undergraduate programs with 29 majors and 59 minors, 54 graduate level specialisations and 6 Doctoral programs. Its prominent facilities and centers are Sidney Mishkin Gallery, Steven L. Newman Hall, Lawrence and Eris Field Building, William and Anita Newman Library, Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship, Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity, Weissman Center for International Business and others.
