Cottey College Seal About Cottey College

Cottey is a Private and independent liberal arts and sciences college that began its journey as Vernon Seminar. Founder Virginia Alice Cottey has had teaching experience since 1875 and so decided to start her own school as she founded the seminary in 1884. By 1886 as part of its transition, it took on its present name, as a college and entering 20th century, in 1932 closed down seminary, keeping only the college curriculum.

Presently the college is under the ownership of P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic women’s organization and is based in Nevada, Missouri. Being a women’s college, Cottey College has been empowering women by developing intellect, encouraging creativity and inspiring them to become strong leaders of the future.

At Cottey, the young women that enter find a vibrant and empowering atmosphere around the campus. Not only is the academic strong, but campus life allows real world experience by engaging its students in various activities. There are more than 40 students clubs and organisations that serve as primary platform for social activity and engaged learning with fellow students. This also helps in interpersonal relationship and leadership capacity building. There is strong emphasis on spirituality on the campus and students find events such as Hanging of the Greens, Founder’s Weekend, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Service for community engagement; chapel services for prayer and worshipping in person and with others; Bible study groups, and more. There are unique campus traditions such as Cottey Daisies and Watch Out for Ducks; there are also food traditions, class traditions and holiday traditions. There are college athletic teams that take part in intercollegiate competitions and are called ‘Comets’. The campus colors are Blue, Yellow and White.

The academic programs offered at Cottey are four year Bachelors degree with eight majors, and six two year Associate degree programs. Its prestigious departments and facilities are Serenbetz Institute, Blanche Skiff Ross Memorial Library, Rubie Burton Academic Center, Robertson Hall and Reeves Hall.
