About Cornell University
Cornell is a private university and a land, sea and space grant institute. It traces its origins to its founders, Andrew Dickson White and Ezra Cornell who met in 1864 and with each carrying their vision of an educational institute, established it as land grant institution in 1865 with New York State (NYS) Senate. The institute was initially funded by Cornell and through allotment of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862.
It is based in Ithaca, New York and is an Ivy League institute. It is proud to be affiliated with 45 Nobel laureates, as either alumni or faculty. The institute stays deeply committed to disseminating knowledge, encouraging research and inquiry and training students to think for creative solutions to challenging problems.
Students at Cornell University find an engaging campus life at the university. There are more than 1000 student organisations, which serve as small community groups where students of particular interests gather and learn with each other. There is Greek Life on campus which dates back to the origin of the university itself. Students also find greater involvement by helping new students during their orientation and first week. They work as volunteers and student assistants. Students also engage with the public and community by working towards healthy farming practices, teaching high school students, collaborating on research and bringing solutions for wildlife preservation and other such issues. The university also celebrates its unique traditions; which are Dragon Day, Chimes Concert, Slope Day, Homecoming and Cornell Ice Hockey. There are also university athletic teams, called ‘Big Red’ that take part in NCAA Division I. The campus colors are Carnelian, white and black, and the mascot is ‘Touchdown the Bear’.
Academic programs consist of the following: undergraduate programs with 80 majors and 90 minors and 108 fields of study for graduate programs. The university has 100 academic departments. Its prominent departments/facilities are Sidney Cox Library of Music and Dance, Edna McConnell Clark Library, Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, McGraw Tower, Sage Hall, Barnes Hall and more.
