Cooper Union is a private institute offering college level education which was founded in the year 1859. The institute was the vision of Peter Cooper, an inventor, industrialist and philanthropist who was a strong advocate of knowledge and considered education as the step towards progress. The college began without any discrimination of gender or race and is counted among the oldest institutes of higher education in the country.

Presently based in Manhattan, New York City, the college to this day remains to be committed towards imparting knowledge in the fields of arts and sciences, for the sole purpose of intellectual development of its people and advancement of local and global societies.

Life at Cooper Union is dedicated to learning and growth both, inside and outside classrooms. Activities and events outside classroom are organised and planned by the Joint Student Council and the Joint Activities Committee (JAC). These also work collaboratively to support various student clubs, of which more than 80 are present on campus. These include professional clubs, performing arts clubs, drama clubs, recreational, cultural and many others. One interesting event regarding the clubs held each year is the Fall Fest where new students are recruited t o join and work for the clubs. These clubs then organise activities and events such as conferences, lectures, field trips, poetry readings, ice cream socials, international food fairs and also community service activities. Students interested in becoming the campus voice also find work in student newspaper. Sports and athletics are also part of student life at the college, where students take part in varsity teams and sports. The college colors are Maroon and Gold.

As for the academic programs offered at the Cooper Union, these consist of undergraduate degrees and specialised programs; three bachelor degrees and two Master’s degree in the field of architecture, arts, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Its notable departments are Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, Albert Nerken School of Engineering, C.V. Starr Research Foundation at The Cooper Union and Maurice Kanbar Center for Biomedical Engineering.
