Columbia had its beginning in the year 1966 when it was established by a group of entrepreneurs as Caguas City College. By 1974 the college ownership changed hands and with that the college expanded its academic programs to offering Associate programs. It was in the year 1980 that it started to offer baccalaureate program. As the college further expanded, this time through outreach, the college adopted its present name in 1990.

The college has two campuses, the original in Caguas and expanding to Yauco, in Puerto Rico. Columbia Central University is one that is focused on research and innovation as the main goals of its education. The purpose of education at the college is to learn knowledge application and work towards improving communities and economies.

At Columbia students are offered a strictly learning environment, considering these to be the most important years in growth and learning for each of the students. The college along with its quality programs also complements these programs with experiential learning; the courses are taught through hands on training. The college offers advanced laboratory for those studying healthcare programs to give a real life environment to understand work commitment and the heavy responsibility for high work ethos. For those studying technology, not only are the students given the right environment but also given the right tools to practice their skills and learning which accelerates learning and also enhances the overall experience. There are computer labs as well multidisciplinary laboratories. Its Caguas campus also has activity rooms and green areas for the students to take their time off from studies and take part in entertaining and social activities.

The academic programs offered consist of undergraduate programs. In total, these consist of 14 Associate programs, six Bachelors degree programs and 11 Certificate programs. It also offers two Masters Degree programs but those are only available at the Caguas Campus.
