Clarkson University Seal About Clarkson University

A Private research university, it began as Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology in 1896. The school was founded on the philosophy and vision of Thomas S. Clarkson, an entrepreneur and a businessman, by his sisters after his death. The institute’s charter was amended in 1913 and it became Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology. It was during the 1900s that the college made further development and by 1984 was given the status of the university.

Clarkson University is situated in Potsdam, New York, and has become the face of producing leaders for the global communities. With its rigorous education programs, research opportunities, and experiential learning environment, it develops critical thinking towards collaborative development.

The university is filled with dynamic opportunity for the students to be involved with each other and around the campus. There are more than 100 student led clubs and organisations, where students not only connect with each other but also combine their academics with extracurricular activities. Students further find their voice on the campus through office of Student Affairs. There are many traditional events that are held at the campus and which aim to bring entertainment and fun on campus; these are Fall Family Weekend, Holiday Hoops for Charity, World in Potsdam Diversity Festival, Culture Night and more. At Clarkson, students are also actively involved in bringing more sustainable solutions to the campus, such as towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficient solutions and others. The university also has its athletic participation at the NCAA Division I and III. Its teams are called ‘Golden Knights’ and its campus colors are Green and Gold.

The university offers academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. There are more than 50 majors and minors offered. Its notable departments and facilities are Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering, Clarkson School, Bertrand H. Snell Hall, Cora and Bayard Clarkson Science Center, Rowley Labs, Price and Graham Hall, Denny Brown Adirondack Lodge, Hamlin-Powers, Ross-Brooks Marketplace and Harriet Call Burnap Memorial Library.
