Clarke University About Clarke University

Clarke is a present day private liberal arts higher education institute that was founded in 1843 as St. Mary’s Female Academy. It was founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs) and was named after Mary Frances Clarke, the Irish immigrant who founded the BVMs. By 1881 the institute relocated to its present and permanent location and was chartered by the state in 1910.

It was in the year 2010 that the institute which had become Clarke College by then, progressed as Clarke University. It is based in Dubuque, Iowa, and has evolved its education as the times have evolved, changing as per the needs of the students to be intellectually engaging and productive as well as the need for leadership to battle the global challenges.

Clarke is the place where students find a perfect blend of religion, social activities, community engagement as well as cultural immersion. The campus encourages every student for spiritual as well as religious growth; there is campus ministry which not only promotes Catholic teachings but aims at overall theological development through lectures, series and workshops. The students are also reminded of their duties towards their communities through community engagement activities. Students volunteer with the organisations working in the field, such as Mary’s Inn Maternity Home, Mercy Medical Center and many others. For students to socialise with each other and pursue interests, there are 26 student led clubs and organisations present on campus. There are also opportunities to learn about arts from poets, musicians, lecturers, and other artists from around the world. As for the recreational opportunities, the university has its athletic teams ‘Crusaders’ that take part in NAIA. The mascot is Cutlass T. Crusader “Cuttie” and the campus colors are Navy Blue and Gold.

At Clarke, the academic programs consist of an Associate degree program, six Bachelor’s degree programs with 31 major choices, four Master’s degree programs and two Doctoral programs. Its prominent facilities are Robert & Ruth Kehl Center, Wahlert Atrium, Terence Donaghoe Hall, Mary Benedict Hall, Mary Frances Hall, Catherine Byrne Hall and a few more.
