CWU is a public university that was established in 1891 as Washington State Normal School. The school opened up to serve the educational needs for formally trained elementary and high school teachers. The school transformed during its journey, gradually advancing as well as adapting as per the needs of the time. It became a state college in 1961 and with further progress over the years it transitioned into a university by 1977.

Central Washington University is located in Ellensburg, Washington. With its academic expansion over the years, the university has also widened its mission and aims to lead its students into not research and scholarship through active exchange of intellect, and through values of positive and productive contribution to societies.

The students that walk into CWU are promised an active academic journey and vibrant campus environment. Students are inducted in the campus through thorough orientation programs which introduces them with campus history and traditions which is academic excellence and community awareness. Further on, students are provided with the opportunity to participate in student led clubs and organizations. There are over 125 such clubs on campus covering academic, sports, technology, sciences, environment, business, engineering and more. There is Student Union which discusses student concerns and helps students in mobilizing at the campus. As a concerned institute for its students, the university also engages families of the students. Through its Parent and Family Programs, it involves parents for active participation in this important journey of their children. Students also hold events and activities that are solely intended at brining entertainment on campus and increasing social interactivity, such as comedy performances, open mic nights, movie screening and other such events. There are athletic teams as well, ‘Wildcats’ that take part in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). The campus colors are Crimson and Black.

The academic programs offered at CWU are undergraduate degree programs with over 135 major choices and 32 Master’s degree programs. These are offered through four colleges. Its prominent facilities are Jerrilyn McIntire Music Education Facility, McConnell Auditorium, Barge Hall, Mitchell Hall, Samuelson Hall, Kamola Hall, Sue Lombard Hall, and others.
