About California Institute of the Arts
CalArts is a Private university providing education in the field of arts, and was founded around the dream and vision of Walt Disney. With his life’s work revolving around arts and creative imagination, Disney envisioned a school which would bring arts and artists into practical field. It was in 1961 that Disney, along with his brother established California Institute of the Arts, by merging two separate schools providing arts and music education.
With rich experience and famed career of its founder, the institute since its inception has been the driving force for its students to expand their creative limits and to incorporate global and futuristic approach to their idea. CalArts is based in Los Angeles, California,
Being a visual and the performing arts university, California Institute of the Arts is composed of student activities aimed at bringing fun and inducing students with creativity. There are various student led groups and organisations that encourage students to pursue their interests beyond the walls of the classroom. There is anime club, acting and filming clubs, comedy groups but there are also spiritual groups and a soccer club. The campus is famous for its ‘Boot Camp’, which holds music classes extra on Fridays introducing the students to the music of different cultures around the globe. The institute has its gateway program where the students take a one week trip around Los Angeles understanding the arts, culture, history and other essential features.
Academic programs at CalArts are composed of undergraduate study and graduate programs. It offers more than 70 degree programs in arts; literary, performing, visual and media. The programs are organized in six of its schools and the distinctive of these are The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance and The Herb Alpert School of Music. Some of its prominent facilities include Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Walt Disney Modular Theatre and others.
