A Private, coeducation, four year higher education institute, BVU began its journey more than 125 years ago, when it opened its doors in 1891 as Buena Vista College. The college was founded by Presbyterian Church (USA). It received its first accreditation in 1952 and with another accreditation of its graduate program in 1995, the college eventually progressed as a university; hence adopting its new name.

The university brings better integrated academics and experiential learning by allowing students to be involved in a multidisciplinary experience, having a global perspective. It aims to prepare for the career, but also for a meaningful life as a responsible member of society. The university based in Storm Lake, Iowa, also operates through 15 other locations throughout the state.

Buena Vista University has an interesting mix of activities that are all aimed at getting students to be involved; with themselves, with each other, with the faculty, with the university and with the outside community. There is campus ministry and a chapel where students enjoy spiritual uplifting. Then there are student organisations that range from dance and improve groups to racial associations and adventure groups/clubs. There are more than 60 student organisations. Students also put in their time in community service, volunteering for activities. Some unique events held at the university include its Buenafication Day, a community service day; William W. Siebens American Heritage Lecture, which brings recognized leaders and guest speakers on campus and there is also university tradition, the Victory Arch, which plays a huge role when celebrating two of the universities annual events. There are athletic teams on campus participating at the NCAA Division III with the colors Navy Blue and Gold and the mascot ‘Beavers’.

BVU offers programs and majors in more than 30 fields of study. It offers both bachelors and masters degree program, with a choice of 43 majors and 15 pre professional programs. These are organised into 5 schools and colleges and its most prestigious department is the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business.
