About Briar Cliff University
It was in 1930 that the present day liberal arts university was established as a college. The idea had begun as a women’s college for better opportunities for women, with the Most Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese and Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis. With support of $ 25,000 from the community, the college was set up and first classes commenced with 25 women. However, today it is a coeducational institute.
Briar Cliff is situated on the hill of Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa, after which the university has been named. The college maintains its Christian roots in Franciscan Roman Catholic traditions and so promises to its student’s intellectual engagement, free thinking and extending their service to others.
At Briar Cliff University, life at campus is all about learning, from classrooms to outside classrooms and while living together. Students engage themselves with each other, with the faculty and with the outside world through many extracurricular activities. There are ambassador programs and academic peer mentors and other interest groups, where students connect with each other and also help each other. One group, ‘Emerging Leaders’, is where students shed light on community issues and similarly there are over 30 groups including political groups as well as musical groups. There is campus ministry which offers prayer, worship and community building. Through these not only reflect on their present and grow thankful but also enhance their spirituality and resume the connection. There are sports at the campus with 18 varsity teams participating at the NAIA. The campus colors are Blue and Gold.
The university offers undergraduate program with over 35 majors and more than 25 minors. It offers seven Master’s Degree programs and two Doctoral programs, along with having online education. Its prestigious facilities include Bishop Mueller Library.
