Beacon started with Patricia and Peter Latham, advocates for the learning-disabilities along with a bunch of parents with the same vision and ideals about having an institute serving the disabled children. With their efforts, the college was incorporated in 1989, on May 24. The college was to induct a curriculum and education pattern most suited, focused and tailored to the needs of individuals who have a different set of learning patterns. It was approved by the Florida Department of Education for an undergraduate curriculum.

It is a Private four year education institute based in Leesburg, Florida, and is honored to be the first accredited institute serving those suffering from ADHD and other learning disabilities. With experienced and dedicated faculty members, the college aims to empower students who look at the world differently.

Campus life at Beacon College is lively and friendly with students and faculty living and spending time like one family. Being an institute for students with learning disabilities, it thrives through its close knit campus environment, a personal classroom interaction and individualized attention and training. The curriculum is completely incorporated with modern technological developments with an aim to empower its students to meet the challenges in the best possible way. The college recently added an art gallery to the campus which exhibits student as well as professional work and is open to public as well. Understanding the need for a complete development, it also has a fitness center for its students equipped with the best facilities. The college also has its set of student organizations who work together to bring activities and events. Students are also involved in off campus recreational activities. Its official colors are Blue and Gold.

Beacon confers Bachelor of Arts and Associate of Arts degrees, offering nine majors and 12 minor choices. It also provides study abroad opportunity through summer program and also a cultural studies program. There are also internship opportunities for students. Its notable facility is the Kristin Michelle Mason Art Gallery.
