About Bates College
Bates since its beginning has always remained a higher education institute which has been nonsectarian as well as coeducational. It was founded in 1855 by Oren B. Cheney, who was a minister by profession. He believed in the idea of having an education institute which serves people on non discriminatory basis. He started Maine State Seminary and after having secured some funds from Benjamin E. Bates, it developed into a college. It was then named after its benefactor as an honor to his deed.
With strong leadership over the years, Bates College gradually grew into a modern day residential college, serving to the needs and contributing to the growth of the communities and based in Lewiston, Maine. It takes pride in its tradition of being the first educational college when it began its journey in New England.
Life at Bates is about ‘engaged liberal arts’. Students don’t just study but they also practice liberal arts. The campus is a mixture of all sorts of activities, with the idea of adding purpose to every ting that is being learnt. Community engagement is the core of the campus life. Students are required to score 70,000 hours of community service throughout their four years of study. There is active community engagement where students take up issues and voice them in their own ways; working through public forums also. Besides, the fun side of Bates is explored through the thriving arts culture. There are visual arts, literary art, and music and theatre performances by the students. Also held is a Dance Festival. Athletics is also an important part of student life; the teams participate at the NCAA Division III. The campus color is Garnet.
The Academic programs at Bates consist of Bachelor degree programs offering 36 majors and 25 minors. It also offers dual degree programs with three other institutes. Its distinctive facility is the Harward Center which serves as the hub for student activities and Olin Arts Center.
