About Barnard College
Barnard is Private liberal arts, women’s only college based in New York City. It was founded in 1889 on the ideals of gender equality policy in academics and because education for women was a critical issue at that time, Annie Nathan Meyer, a writer and a student herself, advocated in favor of education for women. Her two year struggle came to fruition with establishment of this college. Still committed to its mission of serving women’s educational needs on an equal footing, it is the only college in New York City that is still women’s only as of present.
Barnard College is named after Frederick A.P. Barnard, an educator, mathematician, who also served as the 10th president of Columbia College. He is recognized largely for advocating for admission of women at Columbia University. The college though operates independently, but stays affiliated with Columbia University.
Thriving in its legacy of welcoming change and taking risks, student life at Barnard is filled with student activities and leadership opportunities. Arts are considered very important and students actively take part in arts education. It holds theater performances, through Summer Theatre Festival or its Glicker-Milstein Theatre through which students voice cultural concerns and their unique perspectives. Similarly, there is initiative for community engagement; students are enlightened about social justice on the campus as well as throughout their community. It further enhances community engagement by letting students connect with the culture of the vibrant New York City. This it does through its Urban New York Program, a university wide program that allows students to be better aware of their surroundings. There are many other association and leadership opportunities. The college is also not without its traditions; Midnight Breakfast marks the start of finals and Night Carnival which is an annual event held in spring and offers games and entertainment.
Barnard has wide range of academic programs; there are 28 academic departments and 20 programs having more than 45 major choices. There are four centers focused on translations, research on women, leadership and others. Its notable facility is the Glicker-Milstein Theatre.
