About Azusa Pacific University
APU had a very humble beginning. It was the dedication of the men and women who came forward to establish an institute for Christian education. In 1899 the institute was set up in Whittier, California, as a Training School for Christian Workers and was the first Bible college in the region. With limited resources, the institute relocated many times and underwent different leaderships. However, this did not stop the institute from moving forward and with the entire struggle it has now come to be one of the largest universities in the country.
It was in 1981 that it was renamed as Azusa Pacific University and today, operates as a Private university based in Azusa, California. What didn’t change with the university is its vision and dedication to God’s purpose and it remains a Wesleyan-Holiness, evangelical Christian institute.
Life for students at the university is very extensive. Although the university is based in Azusa, there are seven other regional centers that it operates; in Orange County, High Desert, Monrovia, Los Angeles, Murrieta, Inland Empire, and San Diego. Its campus life at Azusa involves prayers and reflection as well as events involving social activity. It holds various events throughout the year at its Richard and Vivian Felix Event Center, ranging from spiritual talks to scientific explorations. The School of Visual and Performing Arts brings various creative performances for the students to enjoy. Besides, the city of Azusa also provides a very culturally vibrant environment. Athletics are also encouraged; it consists of 19 intercollegiate teams that participate in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). They have won eight Directors’ Cup awards. They are now part of NCAA Division II. Its mascot is the cougar and colors Brick and Black.
Academic programs consist of 70 bachelor’s degrees, 46 master’s degrees, and 8 doctoral programs. There are also 18 certificates, 16 credentials and 2 associate’s degrees available. These of its programs are also available online. The university also has prestigious facilities such as John and Marilyn Duke Academic Complex, the Barbara and Jack Lee Place of Prayer and Richard and Vivian Felix Event Center.
