AMDA began its journey in 1964 as a musical theater school to be run by professional artists and performers. This institute did not only made its mark in the performing community in New York but also attracted attention from some of the giants of theater. The institute soon grew into a success through its productions and over the years developed into an accredited institute offering degree programs. The institute has campuses based in Manhattan, New York City and Los Angeles, California.

The American Musical and Dramatic Academy still continues to train its students under the guidance of some of the successful performers as its faculty, guiding and developing students to the best of benchmarks in the industry. It also takes pride in being the sole institute providing Bachelors degree in Fine Arts along with being a performing arts institute in both New York City and Los Angeles.

The unique perspective at AMDA holds individuals defining their own arts in their respective fields. Hence, the institute combines education with performance based instruction. The education is complemented through Film making projects, vision projects and showcase events where students get the chance to produce, direct or assist on production of films, theatrical performances and others. Other innovative activities include Project 15 Series where only 15 minutes are given to students to act or a musical performance or any other. There are ‘Dance workshops’ too where students interested create their original pieces with assistance with professional choreographers.

The degree program offered at AMDA is the Bachelor of Fine Arts in four arts discipline: Acting, Music Theater, Dance Theater and Performing Arts. Besides, there are Certifications also available with the academy, called the ‘Conservatory Performing Arts’ mainly focusing on practical aspects of the arts. The academy also hosts a summer camp offering practical experience and instruction for young professionals. The notable buildings at AMDA are the Ansonia Building, a historic building and Lincoln Center.
