American Jewish University Seal About American Jewish University

American Jewish University resulted from the merger of the University of Judaism (UJ) and Brandeis-Bardin Institute (BBI) when the two institutes came together in 2007. UJ was founded by Dr. Mordecai Kaplan in 1947. An Author, Kaplan wanted an institute educating the community about Jewish heritage. BBI on the other hand began as Brandeis Collegiate Institute, also during the 1940s, with a similar objective about passing on the Jewish heritage. It was named partly after Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice of the country and partly after its founder, Dr. Shlomo Bardin.

As of presently, AJU is a non denominational, private institute based in Los Angeles, California. The university through its collaboration has come to become an institute rich in resources preserving and promoting the Jewish knowledge, intellect, community and culture. Each of the institute have contributed their own academic resources and have developed AJU as a distinctive university open for students wishing to learn and craft a professional career through the Jewish education.

AJU is a multi campus facility, each of the former institutes bringing in their individual activities and programs offered under new founded university. One such social and interactive program offered is the ‘Camp Alonim’. This started with BBI in 1953 with the objective of experiencing Judaism through the arts such as dance, music, arts with sports and other activities also joining in over the years. This activity has still continued at AJU. As part of its community awareness program, the university has ‘Sigi Ziering Institute’ which focuses on the consequences of holocaust through ethical and religious perspectives. This is intended at developing understanding and responsibility of human catastrophe.

Other academic programs at AJU include undergraduate, graduate and adult degree programs. The undergraduate programs include liberal arts and sciences, Jewish studies and other programs. The two graduate schools provide Master’s degree in arts and business administration as well as education. Its notable departments are The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, offering orthodox Jewish studies; Sigi Ziering Institute, focusing Holocaust; Whizin Center for Continuing Education, adult education with various programs.
