About Adelphi University
Adelphi University traces its early beginning as Adelphi Academy, established in 1863. Within a span of three years, this preparatory school was incorporated and with a Board of Trustees appointed, the school was soon on its mission to become a diversified training institute. With further progress, absence of Liberal Arts education in the area turned this institute into a college and by 1963 into a university. Staring in Brooklyn, New York, the university is presently located in Garden city, New York.
At Adelphi, the students are deeply rooted with a strong sense of pride as well as unity. This is reflected in its tradition of honoring its high achievers and benefactors by naming its buildings after them, such as Alice Brown Early Learning Center named after Alice Brown, Klapper Center for Fine Arts after Adele and Herbert J. Klapper and The Ruth S. Harley University Center after Ruth S. Harley.
Adelphi set another example of progress and service to its community when it began Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in 1980. With a huge number of volunteers, the program serves as emotional and educational support for breast cancer patients. The university also has a strong athletic culture; its teams participate at NCAA Division II and have won 15 national championships. Its official colors are Gold and Brown and its mascot is a Panther. Adding to its uniqueness are also some of its traditions such as its Official Anthem as well as its fight song.
The university grants baccalaureate degrees under more than 50 study choices. There are graduate programs and Ph.D. as well along with Certificates, Associates and other programs as well. It also offers its famous Levermore Global Scholars program (LGS) that provides its students with the opportunity to participate in seminars, internships, cultural exchange and other activities at the United Nations. Its distinguished departments include Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Ruth S. Ammon School of Education and Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.
