About University of South Florida
USF is a public research university and a member institute of the State University System of Florida. It was founded in year 1956 as the first independent state university, signed by Florida Governor LeRoy Collins in 1955. The name approval for the institute came in 1957 and it was in 1960 that it held its first classes. By 1965 the university had already received full accreditation.
Over the years, University of South Florida made progress, expanding its academic as well as campus life. By 1971 it had awarded its first doctoral degree and became part of the system in year 1974. With its gradual progress it has transformed into an institute improving intellect and empowering students for growth and success.
The campus life at USF is filled with opportunities and activities aimed at developing students in more than just academics. For student involvement, there are more 600 student organisations ranging from academic, to religious to recreation. There are leadership programs offered through Emerging Leaders Institute, Lead fellows and other programs along with civic engagement through volunteering and community service opportunities. The university also celebrates its Days of Service. There are also multicultural activities, programs and celebrations as USF strives to be inclusive of global communities and cultures. The university also celebrates arts through its galleries and public art programs, museums and many annual events such as performances, concerts, festivals and others. The university is also committed towards sustainability causes by promoting and supporting activities such as sea turtle conservatory, tree planting and others. The university has its share of traditions such as Homecoming, The Scoring Celebration, its marching band ‘Stampeding Herd of Thunder’, and more. Physical activities consist of sports as well as athletic participation at NCAA Division I. Its teams are called ‘Bulls’, the mascot is ‘Rocky the Bull’ and colors ‘Green and Gold’.
Its academic programs consist of 80+ Undergraduate majors and concentrations, 100+ Masters and Doctoral programs. Its prominent facilities/departments are Morsani College of Medicine, Muma College of Business, Patel College of Global Sustainability, Juniper-Poplar Hall, Marshall Student Center and others.
